I remember so clearly the day that I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease

When I was twenty-two, I was diagnosed with an extreme form of ulcerative colitis, resulting in severe —and in my case, life-threatening—malabsorption, malnutrition, and anemia.

My doctors prescribed high-dose medications to manage the symptoms but the side effects were crippling.
